Learn the 5 card stud poker hands!

5 card stud used to be very popular - but with new variations of poker being played, this game is relatively rare now. 5 card stud was one of the preliminary events in the World Series of Poker from 1971 – 1974. All the events were won by Bill Boyd. It was dropped in the 1975 World Series of Poker and hasn’t been played at the tournament since then.

In order from worst to best, the 5 card stud poker hands are:

  1. High card (hand with highest card win the game)
  2. Pair (of the 5 cards you have two of the cards are of the same value)
  3. Two pair (from the 5 cards you have you have two pairs. For example two threes and two eights)
  4. Three of a kind (often known as trips, your hand has three cards of the same value, for example three nines)
  5. Straight (all 5 cards in your hand are in sequence, for example five, six, seven, eight, nine)
  6. Flush (all 5 cards in your hand are all the same suit)
  7. Full House (your hand consists of both trips and a pair, for example three jacks AND two threes)
  8. 4 of a kind (your hand contains 4 cards of the same value, for example four kings)
  9. Straight Flush (the best type of hand you can get. The five cards in your hand are in sequence and are the same suit. For example six of clubs, seven of clubs, eight of clubs, nine of clubs, ten of clubs. The best possible hand is known as a royal flush. It is the highest straight flush available, running from 10 to ace.
